B. Essay type of questions.

Q.01) Identify the voices of poetry in the poem. How does Keats establish continuity through these voices?                   or,

Give the substance of the poem, "The Poetry of Earth".

Ans:- In the poem, "The Poetry of Earth" the voices of the Grasshopper and the Cricket are the voices of poetry. The poet John Keats establishes continuity of the poetry of earth through these voices. In the scorching heat of the sun of the summer season, when all the birds are tired, they stop their singing and take rest in the cool shadow of trees. After this, the Grasshopper begins to sing from one bush to another bush. After enjoying a lot of fun, he is tired and takes a rest at a comfortable place under the soft grasses. Again at the advent of the winter, the Cricket begins to sing and the warmth of fire and sweetness of the Cricket's song, compel a person to enjoy half-sleep drowsiness.

Thus the poet John Keats establishes continuity of nature's song.

Q.02) Why does the poet choose the sonnet form for his poem? Give reasons.

Ans:- The poet John Keats's poem, "The Poetry of Earth", is a fine and appropriate specimen of Petrarchan sonnet. This poem contains fourteen lines, which has been written into two stanzas- First stanza which contains eight lines is called 'Octave' and the second stanza which contains six lines is called 'Sestet'. The octave follows the rhyme scheme abbaabba and the sestet, cdecde. The form and structure of the sonnet are suitable for developing the theme through illustration and contrast.

The octave describes the song of summer and the sestet describes the song of winter. Thus together the octave and sestet show the continuous flow of the song of Nature.

Q.03) Give the significance of the title of the poem?

Ans:- Through the title of the sonnet, "The Poetry of Earth", John Keats develops the theme that the song of Nature never stops. Being tired in the scorching heat of the sun, all birds take a rest in the cool shadow of trees, then the Grasshopper comes forward as the singer of summer and begins to sing ceaselessly from one bush to another bush. The grasshopper takes a rest in the soft grass for when he tired out of fun throughout the entire summer. Again the Cricket comes forward as the singer of winter and begins to sing in the silent and frosty winter evening. In this way, the song of Nature goes on forever.

Thus the title of the sonnet, "The Poetry of Earth" is the most appropriate and suitable.

C. Essay type of lining questions.

01) "He takes the lead in summer luxury."

 Q:- Who is he?

Q:- When does he take the lead?

 Q:- What is 'Summer luxury'?

Ans:- Here 'he' is the Grasshopper.

In the scorching heat of summer when all birds are tired and take shelter under the cool shade of trees, then the Grasshopper comes forward as the singer of the summer and takes the lead.

Summer is very beautiful but sometimes it becomes insufferable and unbearable due to the scorching heat of the sun. Birds take rest under the cool shade of trees. But happily, Grasshopper feels the summer is very suitable and pleasant. It flies around and sings songs ceaselessly and freely. So summer is luxurious to Grasshopper.

02) "He has never done with his delights."

Q:- Who is ‘he’ referred to here?

Q:- What are the ‘delights’ referred to here?

Q:- Why has he never done with his delights?

Ans:- Here ‘he’ refers to the Grasshopper.

Here the delights are the delights of the Grasshopper. Out of joy the Grasshopper runs about singing in the scorching heat of the sun. It runs from bush to bush. It moves about the newly–mown mead. Thus he enjoys delights.

When all the birds take rest under the cool shade of trees because of the hot sun. The Grasshopper takes the lead, finds summer pleasant and likes sunshine. He moves from one bush to another bush and continues with Nature's song. He enjoys it very much with all that. That is why he has never done with his delights.

03) "Poetry of earth is never dead."

Q:- From where is the quoted line taken?

Q:- What is the meaning of "The Poetry of Earth"?

Q:-Why is the 'poetry of earth' never dead?

Ans:- The above-quoted line has been taken from the sonnet "The Poetry of Earth", a beautiful poem.

Here 'The Poetry of Earth' is the endless music or poetry of Nature. The insects like Grasshopper and Cricket have carried the music of Nature. Nature’s music has no end and goes on continuously.

The Grasshopper and Cricket take the responsibility of Nature's poetry or music. They carry on with it. The Grasshopper carries on the music in summer and the Cricket in winter.

Thus both of them enjoy and celebrate poetry or music throughout the cycle of seasons.
